A Heartfelt Tribute from the North Essex Centre

When members gathered for the 2026 AGM at Pleshey, nobody could have predicted that the closing address would mark the end of an absolute golden era in North Essex rallying. Taking to the floor, Arthur and Lila announced that after 46 incredible years and more than 850 rallies, they are officially hanging up their towing mirrors.

To say Arthur and Lila are the North Essex Centre is no exaggeration. For nearly five decades, they haven't just been on the field—they have been the very heartbeat, stability, and guiding light of our club.

🛡️ Double Chairmen & The Pillars of the Club

Stepping up to the Committee is one thing, but taking on the mantle of Centre Chairman is a daunting challenge for anyone. Arthur and Lila didn't just take it on—they flourished in the role, steering the Centre with steady wisdom, warmth, and boundless good humour.

And because doing it once simply wasn't enough for this dynamic duo, they returned to the helm to serve as Chairman not just once, but twice!

Over the years, whether marshalling rallies, serving in committee roles, or quietly offering wise "Chairman advice" to those following in their footsteps, Arthur was always the walking encyclopaedia of North Essex history. If anyone ever struggled to recall a face, a rule, or an event from decades gone by, Arthur was the man with the answer!

🍰 Legendary Cakes & Pure Dedication

Beyond the official badges and titles, Arthur and Lila brought pure joy to every field they pitched on:

• Nothing Kept Them Away: In recent years, not even serious health hurdles or recovering from major surgeries could keep them from their rallying family. Even when resting up, they would pop by the field just to say hello—and the moment doctors gave the green light, the van was hitched straight back up!
  
  
• Lila’s Famous Bakery: Let’s be honest—you cannot talk about North Essex rallies without mentioning Lila’s legendary cakes. Over the years, Lila has made ralliers the happiest people alive with her baking. In fact, after making one couple’s 25th wedding anniversary cake, the word is officially out: Lila, your retirement only applies to towing mirrors—you are definitely NOT getting out of baking their 50th anniversary cake in a few years’ time! 🎂😉

Arthur and Lila’s closing speech at the AGM wasn’t just the wrap-up of another meeting; it marked the fond conclusion of the "Arthur & Lila Era."

To both of you: thank you for the 100% dedication, the hundreds of weekends marshalled, the unwavering personal support, the sage advice, and the countless laughs over a cuppa and a slice of cake.

You leave behind a legacy that will inspire North Essex ralliers for generations to come. While we will miss seeing your van pitched up alongside us, we are so very proud, privileged, and thankful to call you our dear friends.
