500 Rallies and Counting!
Celebrating Mick & Marion’s Incredible Milestone
We are absolutely thrilled to raise a glass (and a tea mug!) to Mick & Marion, who have reached the staggering milestone of 500 rally attendances with the North Essex Centre!
To put that into perspective: that’s an average of 12.5 rallies every single year for 40 years. Through rain, shine, frozen gas mantles, and four decades of memories, they’ve proven that the rally field is truly where their hearts are.
The Tea & Cake Slighting of 1986 ☕🍰
It all kicked off back in 1986 at the East Mersea AGM. The field was packed with over 200 members and 100 caravans. Naturally, the Chairman at the time, Brian R., was running around like a headless chicken.
Standard protocol dictated that all new ralliers were to be welcomed with a cozy reception of tea and cake. But in the midst of the AGM chaos, Brian totally forgot!
Did Mick and Marion let it slide? Not a chance.
They lovingly teased and reminded Brian about his tragic hospitality oversight for years… until they finally got their hands on that legendary cup of tea and slice of cake!
Roughing It in the ACE 🚐
Their first home-on-wheels was a trusty ACE caravan, lovingly passed down by Mick’s mum. Calling it "basic" is an understatement:
Lighting: Temperamental gas mantles that required patience and a prayer.
Running Water: Powered strictly by leg day—via a manual foot pump!
Insulation: Non-existent. Absolute perfection in July; a trial of human endurance in January.
Unsurprisingly, their kids were less than impressed with this vintage luxury. Upon arrival at a rally field, they would sit in the car and politely refuse to step foot inside until the lights were working and the heater was cranked up!
Undeterred by freezing nights and stubborn gas lamps, Mick and Marion fell so completely in love with the adventure that they rallied right through their very first winter.
ABBA, Volleyball, and 40 Years of Laughs 🎉
By 1991, they had linked up with a fantastic group of like-minded rally families, and their caravan adventures went into overdrive.
Over four decades, the memories have piled up—including legendary New Year’s rallies at Seawick Holiday Park. Ask them about the ABBA tribute act one year: three brilliant singers and a fourth mystery member who looked like they’d wandered off the street and hadn't a single clue what was happening! The sheer hilarity of that performance is still talked about today.
They were also staples at 15+ Caravan Club Nationals, where they weren't just spectators—they were fierce competitors. Their sport of choice? Volleyball, where they routinely showed everyone else how it was done!
A True Family Affair 🤝
Not content with just attending, Mick stepped up to help steer the North Essex Centre forward, serving as Vice Chairman. Following in their parents' treadmarks, their children joined the Junior Committee, making the club a true family legacy.
Life happens, and over 40 years, rally attendance naturally peaks and troughs. But to hit 500 rallies is an absolute triumph of dedication, friendship, and standard British outdoor spirit.
And the best part? They’re not done yet!
A massive congratulations to Mick & Marion on 500 rallies! Here's to the next adventure, the next pitch, and plenty more tea and cake. 🥳✨
